CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Pre-Juniors (Ballet/Tap Combo Class)– This class is a basic introduction to dance through creative movement, coordination exercises and motor skills. Basic ballet and tap terminology are introduced and constantly used. Dance games are used to develop the student’s sense of rhythm, patterns and timing. This class is one hour long and includes both ballet and tap lessons.
Classes for Ages 7 and up:
Ballet– These classes utilize ballet techniques, terminology, fluidity, presentation, stretch and flexibility. The focus is on healthful exercise and proper technique through the joy of dancing. Classes are divided according to ability and age, and students are placed in these classes accordingly.
Step– These classes introduce the students to the art of stepping, which some trace back to the West Africa and the coal miners of South Africa who would use their bodies to produce rhythms and music. The body itself becomes the instrument: clapping, slapping the hands against various parts of the body, and stomping the feet produce the complex rhythmic foundation for the dance. These classes start with various warm-ups and drills which lead up to series of exercises and combinations to form rhythmic beats and movements.
Jazz and Tap – These classes focus on isolations, rhythmic movements and across the floor and center combination designed to develop strength and flexibility. A variety of jazz and tap styles are explored in these classes.
Hip-Hop (Ages 11 and up)– This class uses contemporary and older Hip-Hop music to explore the variety of dance style trends in the past and present. Exercises are designed to strengthen and broaden the dancers’ abilities. New combinations are taught every few weeks.
